Son of Victor Honorious Janssen and Breckie Colet de Rapallje. Honorious was also a historical painter.

Abraham was a Flemish historical, mythological and religious painter. His works are on view in the Antwerp Museum, the Vienna Gallery, the NYC Metropolitan Museum of Art and other well known galleries. He was known for large paintings based on the sculpture and art of Michelangelo and Raphael.
The 17th century painting of the Virgin and Child is on the 2014 Canada Post stamp celebrating the 350th anniversay of the Basilica Cathedral Notre-Dame de Québec in Québec City.

Janssen was the best historical painter of his time. Janssen and Rubens were rivals. Abraham was better in accuracy; in composition and nudes he was the equal of Rubens. But in colour and touch he was inferior.
Janssen was commissioned to paint Scaldis and Antwerpia for the Antwerp Town Hall.
